Make reading easier first

Larger text and clearer contrast can reduce frustration right away. On iPhone and Android, accessibility settings can change text size, display size, bold text, magnification, and contrast.

After changing a setting, open real apps like Messages, WhatsApp, Contacts, and Settings to confirm the text still fits.

Adjust sound and alerts

Check ringtone volume, media volume, notification sounds, vibration, and whether Do Not Disturb is accidentally enabled.

The goal is not maximum volume. The goal is a comfortable level the person can notice without stress.

Settings to review
SettingWhy it helpsWhat to check
Text sizeMakes menus and messages easier to read.Buttons should still fit.
Display sizeMakes icons and controls easier to tap.Avoid crowding the screen.
ContrastImproves separation between text and background.Use readability over decoration.
VolumeHelps notice calls and messages.Avoid painful or startling sound.

Write down the new routine

After making changes, write down where the settings are. This helps the person feel in control and makes future changes easier.

If a change makes things worse, go back. Accessibility is personal, and the best setting is the one that works for that person.

Frequently asked questions

Can larger text break app layouts?

Sometimes text can wrap or crowd buttons. Test the most important apps after changing font and display size.

Should family members change everything at once?

No. Change one or two settings at a time, then ask the older adult what feels easier.
